Removing the major part of vaporisable liqs. contained in an aws. polymer dispersion comprises introducing a downward stream of the dispersion into a vertical, tubular stripping column having vertically spaced horizontal plates. Each plate has openings, an overflow and a discharge duct leading to, and contacting, the liq. on the next lower plate, the overflow serving to maintain the level of the aq. dispersion on the plate. A hot stripping liq. rises in the column passing via the openings of each plate through the aq. dispersion on the plate so that the vaporisable liqs. are entrained from the dispersion. The stripped dispersion is discharged at the bottom of the column while the stripping liq. contg. the vaporisable liqs. is discharged at the top. This known process is now improved in that the height of the overflows of at least the lower third of the plate assembly is such that the liq. level on these plates is 10-30 cms and the height of the overflows of the top two-thirds is such that the liq. level on the plates is 5-30 cms. Clogging of the column by polymer deposits is eliminated while the consump on of water vapour per unit volume of aq. dispersion is reduced.
|
