A w.c. esp. for a railway carriage comprises a closed waste tank (12) which is connected to a nearby lavatory bowl (10) by a pipe (11). A partial vacuum is created in the tank by a suction device (23). The tank (12) is box-shaped and forms an integral part of a wall of the w.c. compartment. On flushing, the waste water passes from the bowl up the pipe and falls freely into the top of the tank, which can then be emptied e.g. at a station via an outlet valve (13).
