PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that recognizes occurrence of a fault in an original illumination lamp and the possibility of the occurrence in cross-reference with respective lamp characteristics and takes countermeasures in response to a degree of the fault so as to enhance the performance of the image reader. SOLUTION: A prescribed xenon lamp-on time is set after rising of the lamp as a condition corresponding to the characteristic of the lamp and a deficient luminous quantity of the lamp is checked according to 2-stages of threshold values in addition to the condition so as to recognize 4 stages of different degrees of lamp failure. When the luminous quantity of the lamp with a level of the lower threshold value 1 or below is detected within a prescribed time for a plurality of number of times, the inhibited use of the lamp is recognized. Even when the level of the lamp exceeds the threshold value 1 within the prescribed time, if the abnormity of the luminous quantity of the lamp has been detected before, the faulty lamp is recognized. Even when the level of the lamp exceeds the threshold value 1 within the prescribed time, if the level of the lamp cannot exceed the higher threshold value 2, deterioration in the luminous quantity of the lamp is recognized and the results of the recognition above are reflected on the operation or the maintenance of the image reader. |
