PURPOSE:To resolve a corresponding racemic ester to optically active alpha-cyano- 3-phenoxybenzyl alcohol and its antipode ester, by hydrolyzing it asymmetrically with a specific esterase. CONSTITUTION:1-18C saturated or unsaturated carboxylic ester of (R, S)-alpha- cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl alcohol is asymmetrically hydrolyzed with an esterase produced by a bacterium such as Brevibacterium ammoniagenes IFO 12072, etc. belonging to the genus Brevibacterium or Enterobactor, capable of hydrolyzing asymmetrically the ester, at <=7pH, preferably at 3.5-6.5pH, resolved into liberated optically active alpha-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl alcohol and an unreacted antipode ester and recovered. |
