PURPOSE:To efficiently radiate light beams of respective colors on an object to be read by disposing liquid crystal elements so that each of them and each of the light beams of different colors correspond one-to-one each other. CONSTITUTION:For instance, the drive voltage for the liquid crystal element 31 is turned on, and those for the liquid crystal elements 32, 33 are turned off, and only a red light beam is radiated. Since the light beam of the specific color is radiated in such a way as the above, only such light as having an information of the same color as the radiated light's color among the color image information of an object 3 of reading, is reflected. The reflecting light is made form an image on an image sensor 5 by a lens 4, and the sensor 5 detects the information of the specific color. Since the liquid crystal elements 31-33 are so disposed in the optical path that the lights of different colors respectively correspond to each of the said elements, the attenuation of light is limited to that occurring when the light transmits through one of the elements 31-33 only. As a result, lights from light sources 11-13 can be radiated on an object of reading efficiently.
