Prod. for treatment of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia - consists of phospholipid-phospholipid charge carrier liposome system and pent:amidine

A pharmaceutical prod. for parenteral or pulmonal use contains (A) at least one liposome system consisting of a combination of at least one phospholipid and at least one phospholipid charge carrier; and (B) at least one active ingredient based on pentamidine, its derivs. and/or salts. The phospholipid is phosphatidyl choline, esp. in highly pure form. The phospholipid charge carrier is at least one salt esp. Na and/or ammonium salt of phosphatidyl glycerine and/or its derivs., esp. pref. a salt of dimyristoyl- and/or dipalmitoyl-phosphatidyl glycerine, or a soya phosphatidyl glycerine. The mass ratio of phospholipid to phospholipid charge carrier is 50:1-400:1 esp. 100:1-200:1. Component (B) is present in an amt. of 0.001-10 wt%. The prod. is in the form of an aerosol. USE/ADVANTAGE - The prod. has an esp. long shelf life (up to 3 years) and is highly effective as a pharmaceutical. The prod. does not become turbid, nor do the walls of the vessel acquire a coating. A sediment does not form. the prod. can be sterile filtered. pentamidine and its derivs. and salts can be used to treat various infections diseases, e.g. African sleeping sickness, Kala-azar caused by Leishmaniasis and esp. in the treatment of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, an illness particularly common with AIDS patients.
