Synthesis of 1,4-diazabicyclo-(2.2.2.)-octane (triethylenediamine) from piperazine directly is effected by contact with a zeolite catalyst at 250-550 deg.C under 0.1-10 bar (absolute) pressures in the gas phase. The zeolites are (MI.MII02). aMIII02.bH20 where MI is an equiv of monovalent alkalimetal cation or proton or ammonium, or a half-equiv of divalent alkaline earth metal cation; MII is an equiv of one of these trivalent cations; Al3+, B3+, Sb3+, As3+, Cr3+, V3+, Ga3+, Fe3+ and MIII is an equiv of one of these quadrivalent cations, Si4+, Ge4+, Ti4+, Zr4+; a is at least 1, and b is sufficient to maintain the zeolite structure. The zeolite is a cyclopentasilicate type.
