Ionic polymers with a main chain (A), one or more olefinically unsatd. side groups (B), and one or more cations (C) where (A) is formed from an alkadiene polymer A with a number average mol. wt. Mn of 500 20,000 (B) comprises a structure (I) obtd. by (1() maleinisation and (2) partial esterification or amidification of A', R1,R2 = are different H or alkadiene chains A' ; R3 = a multivalent, linear or branched 1 20C aliphatic hydrocarbon whose chain or branches may be interrupted with O, N or S; X = O, S or NH2; Y = a polar gp.; m = O or 1 5; n = 1 3; Z = methylene, ether, amide or ester; R4 = H or methyl Q = carboxyl or carboxylate; (C) cations of Main Gps. I V, I VIII sub-Gps. or the multifunctional organic amines and/or hydrazine.
