METHOD FOR DETECTION OF CHEMICAL CHANGES IN COMPOSITE AND POLYMERIC MATERIALS

A method and apparatus are disclosed for the detection of chemical changes and failure potential in structural composites employing ion mobility spectra and further gaseous analyzers. A sample is heated using radiative energy to a temperature sufficient to effect volatilization of the volatilizable materials in the sample without degrading the structural integrity of the sample with the heat. The volatilizable materials are collected and analyzed, the data permitting diagnosis of the sample to facilitate detection of change and/or failure potential.
