An emergency lighting system for the interior of marine vessels has bulbs (18) on a flexible carrier plate (19) and joined by cables. The attachment to the plate is made water-tight by a protective layer (25). The bulbs may be in series or parallel. They are grouped with at least two bulbs in series per group and at least two groups in parallel. Each bulb has a ballast resistor. The carrier plate has a foil to cover it and is set inside a housing with a transparent cover, the housing being set in the floor. There is also a group of pictograms combined with the bulbs. The bulbs have a radiation angle of between 100 and 140 degrees.
