System and method of handling coded data for barcodes and IC-card

The bar codes (3) identifying purchased wares (5) are read (2) e.g. by a light pen (4) into a microcomputer (10) with a mass memory (11) for data of a range of wares, a read/write circuit (9) and a cash register/printer (12). The read code is compared with the stored data, and the result is written together with the date into the memory of the chip card (7) presented by a purchaser. The read/write circuit is able to identify and accept at least two types of card with different chips (8).
