An air conditioning system and method for conditioning air utilizes a main air conditioning body (12) fitted minimally with an ambient air temperature and humidity sensor (32), a humidifier (34), a conditioned air fan (36), a downstream air temperature and humidity sensor (38), and a central controller (40) for sensing and controlling each of the operative elements (36, 34, 56) of the system. The humidifier includes a plurality of nozzles (52) which spray conditioning water into the incoming airstream (44). Optional components include an air pre-heater (56), a pre-filter, a heat exchanger (60), and a final filter (62).
