PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic vending machine having a self-diagnostic function of an optical transmitting/receiving part which is provided on the main body of the vending machine and a portable data terminal respectively and transmits and receives the optical signals. SOLUTION: An optical transmitting/receiving part 19 which is prepared on the main body of an automatic vending machine and transmits and receives the optical signals is provided with a light emitting element 22 and light receiving element 23 which are placed side by side with the uniform transmitting and receiving directions of optical signals, a translucent protection cover 28 which covers in common both elements 22 and 23 and serves as a light transmitting/receiving surface of optical signals and a control part which controls the operations of both elements 22 and 23. The control part has a self-diagnostic function which compares the optical signal that is transmitted from the element 22 with the reflected optical signal that is reflected on the cover 28 or reflected via a reflector 30 placed opposite to the cover 28 and received by the element 23 and then diagnoses the function of the part 19.
