PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reproduce a characteristic of a received image with higher fidelity and appear preferable to users. SOLUTION: A characteristic amount calculating circuit 41 calculates characteristic amountsα1,α2,α3, representing spatial characteristics of a received image in a block. Simultaneously, the characteristic amount calculation circuit 41 calculates a histogram in a specific color space area as to the received image signal in the block to calculate characteristic amountsβ1,β2 denoting the characteristic of a color distribution of the received image in the block. A discrimination circuit 43 compares the characteristic amountsα1,α2,α3 and the characteristic amountsβ1,β2 with a threshold to decide characteristic amounts x1, x2. A user uses an image reproduction characteristic indicating means 90 to indicate preferred image reproducing characteristics. A selection circuit 53 selects an optimum pattern from among a plurality of intermediate tone generating matrix patterns in response to a combination between indication contents y1, y2, etc., by the image reproduction characteristic indication means 90 and the characteristic amounts x1, x2 as a discrimination result of the discrimination circuit 43.
