PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a newsprint paper for offset printing having high smoothness and small density unevenness, free from color shading in overprinted part and reproducing uniform color. SOLUTION: A newsprint paper for offset printing having a smoothness of 20-90 sec, standard deviation of the paper density of <=0.050 g/cm3, preferably <=0.045 g/cm3 (standard deviation of density/1 mm2 determined by aβ-ray texture meter and a continuous thickness gauge) is produced by treating a newsprint base paper for offset printing with a soft calender composed of a metallic roll and an elastic roll.
