PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for automatically setting TV channel are provided to shorten time period required in the case of automatic channel setting. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for automatically setting a channel of TV includes an analog tuner(31) for tuning an analog broadcast, the first synchronous detector(33) for detecting a synchronous signal from a broadcasting signal tuned by the analog tuner, and a digital tuner(34) for tuning a digital broadcast. The apparatus further has the second synchronous detector(37) for detecting a synchronous signal from a broadcasting signal tuned by the digital tuner, and a microcomputer(40) that tunes a broadcasting signal of a predetermined channel through the analog tuner according to an automatic channel setting command, stores the channel when the first synchronous detector detects a synchronous signal, tunes the channel through the digital tuner when the first synchronous detector does not detect the synchronous signal, and stores a channel whose synchronous signal is detected by the second synchronous detector as a digital channel.
