PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve system capable of increasing engine output while avoiding use of an actuator used for valve lift control under high temperature environment. SOLUTION: This variable valve system is constructed to stop operation of a motor 4 after retaining valve lift quantity at the maximum valve lift quantity by driving the motor 4 when rotation speed of an engine 2 is a predetermined rotation speed or more. Consequently, operation of the motor under an environment of high temperatures exceeding an operation warranty temperature can be avoided, and intake air quantity to the engine 2 is sufficiently secured and engine output can be increased by retaining valve lift quantity at maximum.
