<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine starting device and an engine starting method enabling a reduction in a starting time required from the start of an operating means for starting an engine to the start of the engine. <P>SOLUTION: A handsfree system allowing a door lock to be locked and unlocked and the engine to be started without actually using a vehicle key is mounted on a vehicle. When the push switch of the handsfree system is depressed with a shift lever set at the parking position and a brake pedal depressed, the handsfree system starts the engine. A multiple engine collation is performed for mutually checking an ECU related to the handsfree system and a system check is performed for self-diagnosing the ECU handling critical safety parts.
