A chuck comprises a member 34 movable axially to operate radially-movable jaws 50, 52, 54, the jaws and member having interengaging slanting guide means, such as grooves 70. In a lathe, a turret slide 14 is movable towards a headstock carrying the chuck within a tube 32, the chuck being operated by a piston 38. When operated, the piston 38 moves the sleeve 34 to push grooved segments 64 axially against springs 82 and move the inter-engaged jaws 50, 52, 54 to grip the work. The grooves may be of saw-tooth, rounded or square-cut profile. For accommodating different diameters of workpieces, a cap 48 is removed and the jaws are engaged with different grooves on the segments 64. The jaws may have only one groove and there may be only two jaws. A cover plate 92, Fig. 7, may be provided so that chips entering along the workpiece 80 are deflected out through openings 106. In a further modification, several chucks, each operated by a lever 184, Fig. 10, are mounted on a table 152 of a drilling machine. |
