In a method of homogenizing a thermoplastics mixture by shearing, the mixture or components are closed at successive points in the treatment zone, the rise in temperature due to treatment being counteracted by a low initial temperature of the next addition. An apparatus comprises cooperating members 2, 2<SP>1</SP> in a common housing, components or mixture being dosed at 4, 5, 6. The dose at each point may be controlled by the temperature at that point or upstream of it to provide a predetermined limiting temperature. Equal or different amounts may be added if a mixture containing differing proportions of a component comprising shearing, upstream additions containing greater proportions of the component.
