In a filter of the type having a filter barrier comprised of a series of generally flat filter elements 28 joined along opposed edges to dispose them in zig-zag arrangement, the spacers 34, 36 have undulating surfaces comprised of crests and valleys and are disposed between adjacent filter elements 28 to separate and support them, the spacers being of at least different types and adjacent spacers being of different types to the extent that a crest of each spacer reacts against a crest of its adjacent spacers making therewith an angle of 30-150 degrees, said spacers having passage means therein (valleys 46, flow paths 54) to permit the flow of fluid between the elements and through the filter barrier. As shown, the filter elements and spacers are annular, crests in spacers 34 extending radially thereof and crests in spacers 36 extending annularly thereof, spacers 36 being formed with radial cut-outs 54 to permit fluid flow, and the crests of alternate spacers reacting against each other at 90 degrees. Undulations of the spacers may vary in depth from one edge to the other, alternate spacers being of opposite depth variation. Thus spacers 34 have the greatest undulation depth at the outer edge, spacers 36 have the greatest undulation depth at the inner edge. Sealing at the inner edges is effected by rings 60 and the unit is secured by bolts 42, top plate 38 and bottom plate 40. Two different housings which may be used are shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the arrows indicating the direction of fluid flow. The filter elements may be made of sintered, woven or felted materials of metal or mineral or organic nature. |
