[Also in Division F2] A hydraulically loaded roller for producing a pressure nip with a second roller comprises an outer cylindrical roller shell (12) Fig. 1 (not shown) driven by a pulley 33 and surrounding a fixed non rotatable shaft (13) extending therethrough, an elongated limber shoe (14) pivoted about a pin (16) parallel to the shell axis and having its outer surface (38) Fig. 2 (not shown) adjacent the inner surface (37) of the shell (12) opposite the nip and having a leading edge (39) by which lubricant is built-up as a film between said surfaces (37, 38) during rotation of the shell and a hydraulically actuated axially extending rectangular sectioned piston member (15) mounted within a recess (44) in the shaft (13) and bearing on the pin (16) and thereby urging the shoe (14) against the inner surface (37) of the shell so that a continuous nip loading force is maintained in the roll shell independent of bending of the nip with load. The shaft (13) is hollow to accommodate lubricant feed and return pipes (51, 52) and a hydraulic fluid supply pipe (47a) leading to a radial bore (47) in the shaft which bore (47) leads to recess (44). In Fig. 3 (not shown) a plurality of pistons (15) located in the recess (44) which is divided by members (50) to form a plurality of chambers each connected to a pressure line (47). Control of hydraulic feed pressure is effected by controlling a by-pass valve on the delivery side of a supply pump in response to pressure build-up behind the shoe and also in response to compressed air loading of pistons at the ends of the associated roller. |
