Olefins are separated from mixtures with paraffins and/or aromatics by extracting with an aqueous solution of a heavy metal, particularly silver, fluoborate or fluosilicate, purifying the solution obtained to remove non-olefinic compounds and recovering olefins by stripping. Purification and stripping may be effected by liquid-liquid extraction with an immiscible solvent, e.g. a paraffin or by stripping with steam. In one embodiment the stripping is effected by liquid-liquid extraction using a volatile solvent which is then used in vapour form in the purification. In another embodi ment both stages are effected by extraction, from part of the solvent from the stripping step olefins are recovered and the other part is used in the purification and olefin-lean material recovered from this part is recycled to the original extraction. In an example styrene is separated from C8 aromatics. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 859,440.
