A composition capable of promoting expectoration comprises (a) polyoxyethylene sorbitanmonolaurate (e.g. "Tween" Trade mark) as an expectorant, (b) an electrolyte (c) essential volatile oils and (d) a surface-active copolymerizate of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide of formula wherein a, b and c are each from 1 to 100 and the total of a, b and c is at least 10 (e.g. "Pluronic", Trade mark) as a solubilizing agent for (c). Examples of substances suitable for use as electrolytes include NH 4 Cl, Na citrate, Na triphosphate and Na dihydrogen phosphate; anise, peppermint and eucalyptus oil are examples of essential oils present. The composition may be in the form of an aqueous solution or the preparation may contain a thickening agent e.g. agar-agar, carraghen, carboxymethyl cellulose, pectine or gum arabic, in a sufficient amount to transform the preparation into solid form e.g. pastilles, tablets, lozenges or pellets. |
