A cutter for cutting the edges of, sheet material, such as resilient flexible floor covering 37, 38 to be joined in a tight butt joint, comprises a motor-driven saw blade 19 on a base 10 adapted to be supported from a floor, a guide 24 for positioning the blade relative to the edge of one of the sheets, and a sheet material support 21 carried by the cutter above the level of the floor for supporting two sheets in overlapping relationship for simultaneous cutting while supported off the surface of the floor. The base is supported from the floor by rollers 11 and carries a motor 14, the shaft 18 of which mounts the saw blade 19 extending through a slot 20 in the base. The support 21 is formed with a web 24 which acts both as a guide for the edge of the sheet 38 and carries a plate 25 for supporting the sheet 38. A second web 26 serves both as a guide for the edge of the sheet 37 and supports from the plate 25 a second plate 27 for supporting the sheet 37. The saw blade extends through a slot 28 in plate 25 and into a recess in plate 27 so that as the cutter is moved along the floor, both edges of the sheets are cut. A plate 30, Fig. 5, carried by the base in the plane of the blade extends into the kerf formed by the blade. When the sheets are removed from the support and placed on the floor, the cut edges tightly abut. A fan wheel is driven by a motor 35 and expels into a porous bag. In another embodiment, the base 10<1>, Figs. 6 and 7, is supported by adjustable rollers, and the sheets of material are supported by a shoe 42 carried by a plate 75 which is disposed in the plane of the blade 19 to engage the kerf formed thereby and is adjustable by a screw 74. The edge of the sheet material 371 is engaged by the edge. 54 of a guide 50. The shoe 42 is provided with a plough 49 for removing wet adhesive from the area of the sheets to be cut. The motor 14<1> is mounted on a pivot, whereby the blade may be moved from its cutting position. |
