[Also in Division C5] Novel metal derivatives of the formula where M is a calcium, barium, nickel, cadmium, lead, copper, cobalt, silver, antimony, tin or zinc atom, and R, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>11</SP> and R<SP>111</SP> are substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radicals, at least one of them having the formula where A is non-existent, or is a bivalent hydrocarbon radical containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms and optionally containing an ether, ester or thioether group, at least one of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 is a hydroxyl group, at least one other is an alkyl group which sterically hinders the hydroxyl group, and the remainder are alkyl radicals or hydrogen atoms, are prepared by reacting phosphorus pentasulphide and the appropriate alcohol or alcohols in an approximate molar ratio of 1: 4 at an elevated temperature, and neutralizing the resulting dithiophosphoric acid with a metal oxide MO. A temperature from 50‹ to 200‹ C. is generally employed. The compounds have anti-oxidant, anti-wear, and anti-corrosion properties and are used as oil additives. |
