A heat-curable polymeric composition comprises latices of (a) an interpolymer of a monomer mixture comprising a lower acrylic ester having the structure <FORM:1009919/C3/1> wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and R1 is an alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms or a cyanoalkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, and an alphabeta-olefinically unsaturated aldehyde having the structure <FORM:1009919/C3/2> wherein R2 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms and R3 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and (b) an interpolymer of a monomer mixture comprising a lower acrylic ester having the same structure as in (a) above and an olefinically unsaturated polymerizable compound containing at least one active hydrogen atom as determined by the Zerewitinoff method of analysis. Preferably the copolymer (a) contains 90-99.5% by weight of the ester and 0.5 to 10% by weight of the aldehyde, while copolymer (b) contains 80-99% of the ester and 1 to 20% of the monomer containing an active hydrogen atom. A long list of suitable active hydrogen containing monomers is given those exemplified being <FORM:1009919/C3/3> propylene glycol monoacrylate, N-methylol acrylamide, N-ethylol acrylamide, 2-ethyl-3-acryloxymethyl - 1 - oxacyclobutane trimethylol propane monoallyl ether, glycidyl methacrylate. The individual latices are prepared by conventional emulsion polymerizations. The combined latices undergo a curing reaction or coagulation on drying. |
