A rotary-piston I.C. engine of the intermittent abutment type comprises a casing 44, 46 containing two pairs of diametricallyopposed pistons attached to a pair of rotatable co-axial hubs 32, 36 and a rotatable hub 34 therebetween, respectively, each of the pistons attached to hubs 32, 36 having a plate 26 lodged in its base 14 in sliding contact with hub 34 and made of a material with a thermalexpansion coefficient similar to that of the hubs e.g. cast steel to minimise leakage during operation of the engine. Each piston may be made of light-weight metal and is attached to hubs 32, 36 by bolts 30 extending through base 14 between a pair of heads 10, 12 (Figs. 1, 2, 4, not shown) thereon, sealing strips 38, 40 being provided in said base and heads. Bushes 18 for bolts 30 may be made of material similar to that of plate 26. The pistons attached to hub 34 are generally similar to those attached to hubs 32, 36. The engine may be arranged such that ignition occurs on one side of each piston whilst compression occurs on the other, an opening 22 (Fig. 4) being provided in the head 12 whereby the products of combustion enter the space between the heads to prevent leakage of compressed gases across the sealing strips carried by head 10. The engine may be modified (Fig. 5, not shown) in that it comprises two pairs of diametrally opposed pistons attached to a pair of rotatable co-axial hubs 116 and a rotatable bub 120 therebetween, respectively, each of the pistons attached to hubs 116 having a plate 126 with a layer of friction-reducing material e.g. copper, bronze or carbon, in sliding contact with hub 120. Plate 126 is made of a material with a thermal-expansion coefficient similar to that of the hubs and is fixed to hubs 116 by bolts 124 and locating pins 122, the base 134 of the piston being attached to the plate by screws 138 and locating pins 140. Sealing strips 142, 143, 144, 146 are lodged in hubs 116, hub 120 and, casing 44, 46. Hubs 116 are attached to co-axial hollow shafts 106, 108 whereas hub 120 is attached to a shaft 104 which is supported by a ball bearing 102 concentrically with shafts 106, 108, needle bearings 110, 112 for shafts 106, 108 in engagement with shaft 104. |
