1,117,253. Controlling blowing lances; delivering powdered material. DE WENDEL & CIE S.A. 6 July, 1965 [21 July, 1964], No. 28524/65. Heading F4B. A lance for supplying powdered carbon to a converter is mounted on a carriage for movement to the mouth of the converter, and when in position the lance is inserted and the carbon and air delivery controlled from a point remote from the carriage and converter. The lance is moved by a linkage controlled by a pneumatic cylinder and a relay 21 receiving air to control the carbon delivery is arranged to allow air only to pass to the lance until it has reached a certain degree of immersion. The air is then fed through a device 22 to provide carrier air at a pressure less than that applied above the carbon in a hopper 15 with a counterweighted top valve. After a predetermined period, sufficient to inject all the carbon, the relay 21 operates to supply air directly to the lance, which is now being retracted, until it is clear of the converter. Two or more lance assemblies may be connected in turn to a single air outlet through a flexible hose. |
