Epsilon-hydroxycaproic acid esters are produced by reacting alcohols and the distillation residue obtained from the oxidation of cyclohexane, wherein the reaction is carried out in the supercritical region of the alcohol used. The reaction may be carried out continuously and in the absence of esterification catalysts. Suitable alcohols are those having a critical temperature of less than 360‹ C. e.g. alkanols having from one to eight carbon atoms and cycloalkanols having from five to eight carbon atoms.
