[Also in Divisions C2 and D1] Oil- and water-repellancy is imparted to substrates, such as paper, textiles, wood, plastics, glass and metal, by applying thereto solutions, dispersions or emulsions of fluorocarbon amides of general formula (I) wherein R f is a group of general formula wherein each of the groups R1, which may be the same or different, is a fluorine atom or a fluoroalkyl group having up to 9 carbon atoms, or two of the groups R1 together form a fluoroalkylene group having up to 18 carbon atoms, at least one of the groups R1 being a fluorine atom; each of m and n, which may be the same or different, is 0 or an integer of I to 20, v is 0 or 1 and u is 0 or 1, m+n being 0 to 20, m being at least 1 when v is 0, and v being 0 when m+n+u is greater than 0; M is a hydrogen or fluorine atom, M being a hydrogen atom when n is greater than 0; x is 2 to 6; y is 1 to 4; Z is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having up to 6 carbon atoms, a hydroxyalkyl group having up to 6 carbon atoms, an acyl group of formula -CO-R f or an alkenyl sulphonyl alkyl group of formula wherein each of the groups R2, which may be the same or different, is a hydrogen atom, or an alkyl or substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, R3 is an alkylene, arylene or aralkylene group and p is 0 or 1; and Z1 is a hydrogen atom, alkyl group having up to 6 carbon atoms, a hydroxyalkyl group having up to 6 carbon atoms, an acyl group as defined above, an alkenylsulphonylalkyl group as defined above, or a group of general formula -C x H 2x NHZ wherein x and Z are as defined above; each of the groups Z and each of the groups Z1 being the same or different; subject to the provisos that when the fluorocarbon amide contains an alkenylsulphonylalkyl group, (a) none of the Z and Z1 groups is an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group, and (b) the fluorocarbon amide also contains at least two groups of formula -CO-R f .
