Air is added to the engine exhaust pipe by an engine driven pump, Fig. 1 (not shown), the resultant air and exhaust gas mixture entering a combined afterburner 30 and silencer 32 at 40. A baffle 42, formed with a generally peripheral concentration of apertures, has a single central aperture 48 through which a small quantity of the gas mixture flows towards a ceramic cup 50, Fig. 3 (not shown), located with its generally closed bottom wall (78), which is formed with a single aperture (82), facing upstream. An electrical heating coil (84) located within the cup converts some of the hydrocarbon molecules within the cup into free hydrocarbon radicals, which produce a chain reaction of free radical generation which leads to spontaneous combustion of harmful exhaust constituents. A heat sink 52 comprises material 54 of high thermal capacity, e.g. alumina balls, stainless steel wool or any catalytic material, between two apertured plates, a wire screen 60 preventing blockage of the downstream plate apertures. The silencer 32 comprises staggered baffles 68. In a modification, Figs. 5-7 (not shown), a similar afterburner arrangement is incorporated in a silencer which includes four separate inlet pipes leading exhaust gases from the individual engine cylinders to a manifold located within the silencer casing. |
