Ethylene and up to 30 weight per cent, based on ethylene, of vinyl acetate are copolymerized in the presence of n-butane and/or propane as modifier at 120 DEG to 260 DEG C. and 1900 to 2200 atmospheres. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of free radical catlysts, e.g. t.-butyl perpivalate, t.-butyl perbenzoate, t.-butyl peracetate, t.-butyl peroxide and dilauroyl peroxide, which may be introduced in an inert hydrocarbon solvent, in one or more stages. The products may be used for moulding, coating and laminating. In examples ethylene and vinyl acetate are copolymerized in the presence of (I and III) n-butane and t.-butyl peracetate, (II) propane and t.-butyl peracetate and (IV) n-butane, t.-butyl perpivalate and t.-butylperbenzoate. |
