Gaseous and/or liquid hydrocarbons are flamelessly cracked to give a combustible gas mixture by passing them after being preheated with preheated oxygen, e.g. air, over a two-part bed of catalyst of which the first part is nickel on alumina and the second is nickel on magnesia. Inert layers, e.g. of corundum, may precede and succeed the catalyst parts, and chromium and/or tungsten may be included in the catalyst. Steam and/or CO2 may be included in the reactants, and the reaction may be carried out at pressures of 1 to 50 atmospheres. Preferred volumes of the catalyst parts are given, and a specific example is described in which preheating is to 450 DEG C. Recycled product gas may be added to the feed hydrocarbons, optionally replacing the steam. |
