Aromatic cyanic esters as binders for glass and other fibrous materials. N2A. Have the formula:- R(O-CN)n (I) (where R = aromatic gp. and n = 2-6) examples are m- or p-phenylene biscyanate, dicyanonaphthalenes, dicyanatodiphenylsulphone, (esp.) 4,4'-dicyanatodiphenylmethylmethane (II), etc. Cyanic esters as described in DT. 1,251,023 are also suitable. (I) is applied in monomeric or precondensed form, e.g. as B-stage material prepd. by thermal treatment at 70-180 degrees C. for 2-50 hrs., opt. using a catalyst. The fibrous material may be inorganic (esp. glass) or organic (natural or synthetic) in origin, e.g. cotton, jute, polyamide, polyesters, polyurethanes, etc., with a relatively coarse titer (esp. 90 dtex), e.g. in staple form, esp. as a mat laid by mechanical pneumatic or hydrodynamic means. After applying (I) to the mat it is post-heated at 150-200 degrees C. to give a continuous binder layer and a mat of high strength esp. useful as a reinforcing agent for reinforced plastics (e.g. polyester and epoxy materials). |
