Cold forming of grooves in cylinders using - deformable compression ring

Cold forming of grooves in cylinders, esp. projectile or bullet retaining groove in a shell or cartridge, uses an external, deformable ring which deforms the wall of the cylinder radially inwards until it meets an appropriately shaped groove in an internal mandrel. The mandrel is segmented for later withdrawal or it is the grooved projectile in the armaments application.
