[Also in Division C3] In the production of gelatin and glue, degreased and crushed hard bones and soft bones are separated from each other by introducing a mixture of crushed hard bones and soft bones into a fluid medium having a specific gravity greater than that of the soft bones so that hard bone particles of higher specific gravity drop down to the bottom of the medium to form one layer and soft bone particles of lower specific gravity are raised into an upper separate layer, and discharging the separated hard and soft bone particles from the medium separately. The particles of at least one of the layers are then macerated and boiled to form gelatin and/or glue. The medium may be water or a liquid suspension and may be static or pulsating. The bones may be crushed to a particle size of between 2 and 30 mm. |
