A passenger motor vehicle comprises a transverse engine 7, which is arranged behind the rear seats 4, below a luggage compartment floor 9 and in front of the rear wheel axis and has its cylinders 25 arranged at an acute angle of preferably between 15 and 30 degrees to the horizontal with the combustion chamber ends adjacent the rear seats 4, a change-speed gear transmission 11 which connects the engine 7 and a differential gear 12 and is also mounted behind the rear seats 4, below the floor 9 and in front of the rear wheel axis. The engine is aircooled by a blower 26 and includes an intake manifold 27 mounted above the cylinders 25 and connected to an air cleaner 28 behind the engine crank-case. The exhaust manifold (32) is below the engine and passes through an exhaust cooling heat exchanger (31) to a muffler (33) (Fig. 4, not shown) adjacent the transmission 11. The engine and transmission is mounted on the body and a transverse bar 20 by resilient bearings 34, 35 and 36 and the ends of the bar 20 are secured to support members 21, 22 the ends of which are secured to the body through resilient mounts 23 and (24) (Fig. 3, not shown) which are more resistant to horizontal than vertical relative movements. The rear wheels 16, 16 are driven through drive shafts 13, 14 and are located by trailing arms 17 secured to transverse tubes 18 pivotally mounted on the bar 20 and sprung by coaxial torsion bars 19. The inner ends of the torsion bars are fixed to the bar 20 and the outer ends are secured to the tubes 18. |
