A flask A for receiving radio-active waste from a hot cell in a bin B and capable of connection to the cell so that the shielding effect is maintained, comprises a body 10 formed by inner and outer casings 16, 18 with the intervening space filled with lead 10. The chamber 12 is closed by a lead-filled key 42 having rollers 44, 46 whereby it is guided for movement on two parallel slideways 26, 28 formed on the top 24 of the body 10. The bin B has a lid 21 and is mounted in a carrier 23 connected to a slidable shaft 78, this shaft being connectible to an operating rod (not shown) after removal of a plug 84. During transportation the body 10 is surmounted by a dome 14 secured by arms 56 pivoted at 58 and clamped by screws 59, a seal being effected by a gasket 64. In use, the dome 14 is removed when the flask has arrived at the hot cell, subsequent movement of the flask causing an abutment on the cell to slide the key 42 from off the body 10 and be suspended by the cell. |
