PURPOSE: To provide a method capable of butt welding metal sheets having different thicknesses by a laser beam. CONSTITUTION: The method for butt welding the at least two metal sheets 1 and 2 having the different thicknesses by the laser beam has the following steps: The metal sheets 1 and 2 are brought into contact with each other at their respective lateral face 4, 5 to be butt joined. The thickest metal sheet 1 is irradiated with the laser beam 3 in such a manner that the vertical axis X-X passing through the focal point P of the laser beam 3 on the metal sheet 1 exists at a defined distanced from the joint plane 7 of the metal sheets 1 and 2. The metal sheets are partially melted by the laser beam 3, by which welding and joining at the lateral faces 4 and 5 to be butt joined.
