A railway car 1, Fig. 2, comprises longitudinal flanged beams 3 held in spaced relation by transverse reinforcing plates 4; wheel and axle assemblies 2; cushioning pads 19 of rubber or rubber-like material supporting the beams 3 on the axle boxes 15, and is characterized in that adjacent each wheel 11 a shock absorber 31 is provided on the beams 3 andis arranged to engage the track rail 10, when the car is subjected to excessive impact loads, e.g. loads dropped thereon, and to thereby limit the transmission of excessive forces through the wheel and axle assemblies to the rail. The shock absorber comprises rubber or rubber like pads 35 between the beams 3 and a bumper 40 which can engage the rail 10. A stop 30 is provided adjacent each wheel 11 to engage the rail 10 after the shock absorber 31 is fully compressed. |
