Heading C2C. 1,4,9,9,10,10 - Hexachlorodihydroanthracenes are prepared by treating leuco quinizarine with a halogenating agent until six halogen atoms have been introduced. The hexachlorodihydroanthracenes may be hydrolysed to 1,4- dihaloanthraquinones. Suitable halogenating agents are molecular halogen, for example chlorine or bromine, or an agent that yields halogen in situ, phosphorus tri- and pentabromide, a bromine/dioxane complex, bromine in the presence of phosphorus tribromide, sulphur dichloride, phosphorus pentachloride or phosphorus trichloride in combination with chlorine. |
