[Also in Division F2] The centrifugally cast shell 11 of one of a pair of rolls defining a press nip comprises an outer layer 11a of hard chill iron alloy, an inner layer 11b of soft grey cast iron and an intermediate layer 11c of mottled iron metallurgically bonded to the inner and outer layers each layer having a uniform radial thickness throughout the length of the shell and the inner layers 11b, 11c having a volume between two and four times the volume of the outer layer 1 1a. Deflection of the roll is reduced by means exerting a force on the inner periphery of the shell 11 in the region of the nip. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the roll shell (11b) is internally loaded adjacent the nip by supplying pressure fluid to a space (FP-A) between the shell (11b) and a non-rotary central core (C-4) in the region of the nip. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the roll shell (11C) is internally loaded adjacent the nip by supplying pressure fluid to a chamber (S-5) in a central non-rotary core (C-5). The chamber (S-5) extends the length of the roll and the pressure fluid therein acts through a piston (P-5) and shoe (RS-5) on the inner periphery of the roll shell. An oil film builds up between the shoe and roll shell. The radial thickness of the shell is between <SP>1</SP>/ 3 and <SP>1</SP>/ 10 of the shell diameter.
