1314940 Producing chromium-containing steels EDELSTAHLWERK WITTEN A G 19 April 1971 [24 Jan 1970] 20305/71 Heading C7D Corrosion resistant ferritic steels containing no more than 0À02%C, 16-35%Cr, not more than 0À01%N, with optional additions of elements which will not reduce the ferritic character of the steels (e.g. 0À3-3%Mo) and/or carbide formers (e.g. Nb, Ta, Ti and Zr) by refining a melt containing 16-35%Cr, and at least 1%C, with pure oxygen at a decarburization rate of at least 0À1%C/min until the flue gas flow only just prevents the ingress of air to the melt and then subjecting the melt to vacuum decarburization the steel being protected against re-nitrogenization, at least to more than 0À01%N during decarburization and casting. The carbide former is preferably added to the steel after the decarburization.
