[Also in Division C2] Aromatic compounds substituted by an aliphatic, cycloaliphatio or araliphatic hydrocarbyl radical are prepared by reacting an aromatic compound containing at least one hydrogen atom attached to an aromatic nucleus with an optionally substituted aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or araliphatic halide or alcohol, in the presence of, as catalyst, a ruthenium, rhodium, osmium or iridium compound. Examples describe the reaction of benzyl chloride with benzene, toluene, p-xylene and naphthalene; of cyclohexylchloride with toluene; of t-butylchloride with ethylbenzene and biphenyl; of allylchloride with isopropylbenzene; of 1,4-his- (chloromethyl) benzene 'with 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene; and of benzyl alcohol with benzene. One or two hydrocarbyl groups are introduced into the aromatic compound.
