The automobile has an engine (1) coupled to a switched transmission (3) via a clutch (2), the gear selection lever (6) incorporating a switching device controlling the operation of the clutch. The gear selection lever controls two switches (51,52), the switch signals fed to a control device (16) for the clutch together with signals from at least one operating parameter sensors, for preventing unwanted opening of the clutch. Pref. the sensor detects the selected gear ratio, or the position of the accelerator pedal, only one of the switches operated during each gear selection lever movement.
