An apparatus for dividing carcases (e.g. pigs' carcases) cut open ventrally, comprises a tool relatively movable in the longitudinal direction of the backbone for the splitting thereof and means for clamping the backbone comprising an internal rail to support the underside of the backbone and two external pressure rails disposed one at each side of the backbone for maintaining the backbone clamped against the internal rail. A carcase which has been cut open ventrally, is conveyed by a rail section on to a rod 5 of intermittently rotating stand 3 where the backbone is supported by internal rail 9. The stand is rotated so that the carcase is opposite external pressure rails 13 and splitting knife 28 which is mounted on a tool holder 18 which is movable up and down, and is spring urged towards the rails 13 such that rollers 17 contact the rails 13. The pressure rails 13 are moved by hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders 15 towards the carcase and clamp the backbone against internal rail 9. The holder 18 then is moved due to its spring loading and the knife 28 is urged into a cutting position. The depth of the cut is controlled by rollers 17 rolling on guide paths 16 provided by rails 13. As the knife 28 is moved along the backbone it performs a circular movement. A member 34 situated above the knife 28 moves behind the knife to open up the cut made by knife 28. The rail 9 comprises a plate portion which, during the operation is wedged in the cut open breast and pubic bone of the carcase, and a U-shaped edge portion which acts as a guide for the knife 28. When the backbone has been split the knife arrangement and pressure rails 13 are retracted, the stand 3 is rotated and the carcase is passed to another rail section. |
