Water-soluble salts of 2,4-diamino-6-sulphoalkyl-s-triazines of formula (I):- (where R is an 8-22C aliphatic pref. saturated group) are used as surface active materials with good washing properties, comparable to those of n-dodecyl-benzene sulphonate, for cotton and synthetic fibres, and are well tolerated by skin. They are pref. prepared by reacting alkyl guanamines (II):- (where R1 is an advatangeously saturated 9-26C aliphatic group), as their solutions in conc. H2SO4, with stoichiometrically required amounts SO3, advantageously as oleum. - Complete conversion is effected by additional heating to 90-100 degrees C after reaction.
