The use of riluzole (I) and its salts to prepare medicaments for the treatment of neurological lesions following traumatic injuries, esp. spinal and/or cranial trauma, is new.(I) maybe given orally as tablets, pills, powders, granules solutions etc. at a daily dose of 50-800mg (unit dose 25-200mg), or parenterally as an aqueous or non-aqueous solution, suspension or emulsion at daily dose of 25-600mg i.v. (unit dose 12.5-200mg).In animal tests, administration of (I) decreased by at least 5% the extent of neurological deficiency and zone of haemorrhagic necrosis in the spinal cord grey matter, and protected sensitive neurological routes, following spinal cord lesion, and decreased by at least 5% necrotic lesions following cranial trauma.
