Synthetic rubbers based on conjugated dienes are reacted with maleic anhydride by masticating the rubber at 50 DEG to 300 DEG C. in a mixer, and injecting into the masticated rubber a solution of maleic anhydride, the rubber being reacted with at least 0.01 part by weight of maleic anhydride per 100 parts of rubber. The rubber may be cis-1,4-polybutadiene, cis-1,4-polyisoprene or a butadiene/styrene copolymer, and may be mixed with extender oil. The maleic anhydride may be dissolved in acetone or chloroform. The products may be moulded and vulcanized to form tyres, belts, hoses, tubes, insulation and shock absorbers. Examples describe the reaction of maleic anhydride with cis-1,4-polyisoprene and butadiene/styrene rubbers. |
